A few years ago, I went to my friend Nick’s 40th birthday party.
As part of the celebration, they hired the best, and we everything he had to take part in learning advanced comedy.
(I just felt the shivers of all who read this letter).
We began to produce interesting events and activities to participate in, and we learned about the most important rule of Improv: “Yes it is.”
Two simple words, and the basis of all good jokes:
Whenever someone comes up with an event, statement, or situation, the ONLY acceptable ANSWER is: “yes and”
- Yes: Agree! I accept and agree that whatever happens, no matter how absurd, to be true.
- and: build! Just like a tennis match, when your best friend hits you with the ball, your job is to hit it back! Building on events or events.
For example, if your partner says, “I’m a thug,” your response might be:
- “Yes, I’m also an astronaut police officer, you’re under arrest!”
- “Yes, and I’m my first friend looking for a new group, this is great!”
- “Yes, and my name is Captain Hook, welcome to Pirates Anonymous.”
The “yes and” rule is very important, because there is nothing worse than having a bad friend!
Like Liam Neeson inside .this short sketch. and Ricky Gervais, (I always laugh):
Yes, It’s a Living Law
As a former “gifted child” who had internal objections, I have tried to put “yes” into my life.
The “yes” part is built on acceptance, which I have spent the last two years working to embrace.
Check out my previous posts .Acceptance. and .Wabi Sabi. about more.
It’s the “and” part that I’ve looked at recently.
As Dr. Kristen Neff says in her book .Self-pity.life is hard and so are people:
“Judgement defines people as bad compared to good and tries to capture their essential personality with simple labels.
Choosing wisdom recognizes complexity and ambiguity.”
Nothing is as simple as it seems. Things are not as good or bad as our brain thinks.
So even though we are talking in our heads that want to judge everything in black or white, yes-no, good or bad… Let’s remember that life is a complex mess.
Author F. Scott Fitzgerald once said:
The first test of intelligence is the ability to hold two conflicting ideas in mind at the same time, while still maintaining the ability to work.
For example, one must see that things are hopeless but be determined to make them different.
This is my mission to you today.
Is there an area of your life that is black or white, and could use a challenge instead?
Nothing is as simple as it seems.
Life is hard, and change is hard. AND you are a good person for trying.
Which means there is hope. And .Hope is a warrior emotion..
Also, please go check it out .Liam Neeson skit..
You are welcome.
