I just read an excellent book for patients on rehabbing spinal stenosis, by physical therapist Terri Night: “Rehab Your Own Spinal Stenosis: Ways to Improve Your Spinal Health”. The first is very encouraging, to say that many older people have spinal stenosis and have no symptoms. He added that factors such as inflammation and dehydration, which we have a lot of control over, contribute significantly to the severity of symptoms. He has worked with many patients over the years he said she has terrible symptoms, often worse than mine, and has made a huge difference using the techniques described in this book, including exercise, back and hip stretches, strengthening the muscles around the spine, and lifestyle changes. There is a final discussion about surgical options if symptoms persist, or if you have severe symptoms such as numbness or bladder control.
I have some great ideas about how to change my routine to prevent my back from exploding, and new exercises to try. I highly recommend this book to anyone with spinal stenosis.
